At Eighteen B, we believe in data-back values. As scientists we believe in the power of research and testing so we invest in toxicological screening of every ingredient going into our formulations.
What we chose to put on our skin matters for our overall health. While our skin is a very good barrier, certain chemicals can still get through and impact our bodies. The chemicals to be especially wary of are termed CMRs and endocrine disruptors. Surprisingly, some chemicals suspected of being CMR and endocrine disrupting can be found in skin care products (how this is even possible is discussed at length here). Below we briefly define “CMRs” and “endocrine disruptors”. We also talk about how Eighteen B does not formulate with these high risk chemicals.
What does CMR stand for?
C = carcinogenic
M = mutagenic
R = toxic for reproduction
Chemicals that are labeled as CMR have been associated with:
> Inducing cancer or increasing its incidence
> Increasing the occurrence of permanent changes to genetic material in cells
> Causing adverse effects on sexual function or fertility & developmental toxicity
What is an endocrine disruptor?
Endocrine disrupting chemicals mimic or interfere with the hormones in your body. They are linked with developmental, reproductive, brain, immune, and other problems.
Where do CMRs and endocrine disruptors come from?
> The molecule itself could be toxic
> The chemical itself is not toxic but might be contaminated with toxic chemicals
> The chemical itself is not toxic but when it degrades, releases toxic chemicals
How does Eighteen B formulate without CMRs and endocrine disruptors?
At Eighteen B, we believe in data-back values. As scientists we believe in the power of research and testing so we:
1. Adhere to the most reputable restricted substance lists, evaluating all the ingredients we use in our formulations
***
2. Invest in toxicological screening of every ingredient going into our formulations
***
3. Invest in third party irritation and sensitization testing on every product
***
Below is a list of just some of the ingredients that Eighteen B chooses not to formulate with due to toxicology data showing that these are chemicals of concern when it comes to being CMR and/or endocrine disrupting.
Parabens
Fragrance
Formaldehyde
Heavy metals
Hydroquinone
Mineral oils and petrolatums*
Paraffin
Phthalates
Siloxanes
Triclosan
*the chemical itself is not toxic but can be contaminated with CMR and/or endocrine disrupting chemicals
