The Eighteen B regimen includes four formulations – a serum, an eye cream, and two moisturizers – designed to support the skin barrier through a multi-tasking approach.
The Eighteen B collection includes our brand new Defend + Nourish Eye Cream, Firm + Replenish Serum, our award-winning Revitalizing Hydrogel Moisturizer, and our bestselling Hydrate + Restore Rich Cream. Here’s how these products work together to support the skin barrier for skin that looks healthy, hydrated, and radiant.
Dermatologists agree that a healthy skin barrier is essential for healthy skin. Dr. S. Tyler Hollmig, the Director of Dermatologic Surgery and Director of Laser and Cosmetic Dermatology at the Dell Medical School at the University of Texas at Austin, says “a healthy skin barrier is key to our well-being – and also helps us look our best!”
Despite our best efforts, however, we often damage our skin barrier through our skincare regimen. As Dr. Whitney Bowe, a New York-based dermatologist, told the New York Times, “It’s largely a product of our own obsession with squeaky clean and using product upon product upon product.” When combined with pollution and environmental aggressors, “you have a recipe for skin barrier disaster,” says the Times.
The Eighteen B regimen was designed to support the skin barrier through a multi-faceted approach. First, our proprietary polypeptide, b-silk™ protein, replenishes the natural barrier. Second, it delivers a boost of hydration and carries potent ingredients to the skin. Finally, it creates a lightweight, breathable barrier that locks nourishing ingredients in and keep environmental stressors out. Here’s how to build your regimen with Eighteen B.
Why is the skin barrier so important?
As Dr. Hollmig explains it, the skin barrier “helps to keep the bad stuff out and the good stuff in, and also helps us regulate temperature, feel and interact with our surroundings, and even plays an important role in our immune system.”
When the skin barrier is damaged, skin can look dry, scaly, red, and irritated. What’s more, Dr. Hollmig explains, “atopic dermatitis (eczema), and a host of other skin maladies are largely driven by a weakened skin barrier.”
What can we do to avoid these conditions? Dr. Hollmig recommends “fewer products are better than lots of different products and fewer ingredients trump a laundry list of fragrances and preservatives.”
How to build your regimen with Eighteen B
Our fragrance-free formulations were designed to support the skin barrier through an easy two- or three-step regimen. Our B-silk™ Protein, a key ingredient in all our formulations, is clinically shown to improve texture and smoothness for skin that looks firm, youthful, and healthy. Here’s how to build your regimen with Eighteen B.
Step one: Replenish the skin barrier with our Firm + Replenish Serum.
Our multi-tasking Firm + Replenish Serum has two main functions. First, Serum works to replenish skin’s barrier after cleansing and exfoliating.
How? Serum is packed with Natural Moisturizing Factor (NMF), a cocktail of ingredients that the skin naturally creates to keep itself hydrated. While the skin produces NMF on its own, these ingredients are easily stripped away by common cleansers, skincare products, and environmental factors. Serum replenishes the skin’s NMF so the skin doesn’t need to work as hard.
Then, B-silk™ Protein forms a lightweight, breathable barrier that protects the skin from environmental stressors. Over time, B-silk™ Protein works to deliver long-term firming, visible lifting, and increased elasticity.
Step two: Protect the delicate skin around the eye with our Defend + Nourish Eye Cream.
The thin skin around the eyes needs some extra love. Our Defend + Nourish Eye Cream is packed with B-silk™ Protein, which delivers powerful ingredients to this delicate skin while skillfully defending your natural skin barrier.
B-silk™ Protein forms a lightweight, protective barrier that keeps active ingredients close to the skin so they can do their work. The result? Smoother, more rested looking eyes with less visible wrinkles and faded dark circles. In other words, it’s the eye cream that breaks barriers by building yours.
B-silk™ Protein carries some seriously potent active ingredients to the skin. Hydration comes courtesy of powerful emollients and humectants like Squalane, Jojoba Oil, and Hyaluronic Acid. Jasmine Flower Extract helps improve circulation to banish the appearance of dark circles. Finally, Watermelon Rind Extract, Lentil Fruit Extract, and Apple Extract hydrate and replenish skin to reduce the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, and crepiness.
When you apply, be sure to use your ring finger so you don’t stretch the skin. Any bit helps!
Step three: Hydrate the skin with our B-silk™ Protein-packed moisturizers.
Next, you follow up with a moisturizer. (There’s no need to apply moisturizer on top of Defend + Nourish Eye Cream, but it’s totally fine if there’s a little overlap!)
While the textures and some of the active ingredients are unique, both contain moisture-magnet Hyaluronic Acid (HA), three types of naturally-occurring ceramides, and b-silk™ protein. These ingredients work together to hydrate the skin and support skin barrier function.
How you use our moisturizers is entirely up to you. Many of us at Eighteen B use Revitalizing Hydrogel Moisturizer in the morning, as it layers well under SPF and makeup, and Hydrate + Restore Rich Cream at night, which deeply hydrates while we sleep.
That’s not the only way. Hydrate + Restore Rich Cream is a great choice for keeping skin hydrated during the cooler months.
A few of our Eighteen B Women love the feeling of Hydrate + Restore Rich Cream during the day no matter the season. Felicia Walker, the beauty and skincare expert behind the award-winning beauty blog ThisThatBeauty, told us, “the Rich Cream works really beautifully under makeup. It doesn’t separate the makeup, it doesn’t make the makeup too greasy.” She also uses Hydrate + Restore Rich Cream as a hack midday. “I just press it over my skin to give it more bounce and glow, or to refresh makeup if it’s looking a little matte.”
Katie Jane Hughes, editorial and celebrity makeup artist, reaches for our Hydrate + Restore Rich Cream during the day for glowing skin. Her trick? “I think that kind of product should go in specific areas first. The high points of the face, or the areas where you want all that glow and radiance – that’s where you should concentrate the product. Then with the little bit of sheen that’s left on your fingers, that should go in the places where you’re feeling tight and dry.”
