I think this award signifies an important shift in the beauty world in two ways. One: the beauty consumer wants to talk about skin care and skin health in a transparent and scientific way. Two: sustainable, vegan, and clean beauty is here to stay.
Lindsay Wray, our Chief Science Officer, is a proud recipient of ELLE’s 2019 Future of Beauty Award. We talked to Lindsay about what the award means to her and how she’s working to change the industry one ingredient at a time. We’re so proud!
This year, ELLE published its first-ever Future of Beauty Awards, honoring the most exciting innovations in the beauty industry. We are proud to announce that our very own Lindsay Wray, Chief Science Officer, was among the 2019 winners.
The Future of Beauty Awards honor innovations in skincare products, haircare products, makeup, and body treatments, as well as the founders behind industry-shaking companies. Here’s what ELLE had to say about Lindsay and Eighteen B:
“Lindsay Wray, chief science officer at Eighteen B, developed the first-ever biodegradable vegan silk, which has regenerative properties and helps improve skin’s elasticity. She champions sustainability by researching common skin-care ingredients to determine their environmental impact and how to replace the harmful ones, like liquid plastics, with greener alternatives.” – ELLE

Lindsay says, “I am truly honored to get this award. I have a lot of respect for the people at ELLE and am so glad the feeling is mutual. I think the meaning of this award is much bigger than myself. I think this award signifies an important shift in the beauty world in two ways. One: the beauty consumer wants to talk about skin care and skin health in a transparent and scientific way. Two: sustainable, vegan, and clean beauty is here to stay.”
The Eighteen B team was particularly thrilled to see Lindsay’s environmental research highlighted. Lindsay puts an impressive amount of time and energy into researching each ingredient’s toxicology profile. When data is tough to interpret, we hire trained toxicologists to assist. If the data can’t be found, she makes contact with the vendors to get answers.
As Lindsay puts it, “This takes a lot of time and energy but the result is high confidence in our ingredient lists – no fear mongering, no regrettable substitutions.”

As for what the future of holds for Eighteen B, Lindsay has big plans. “There are three things I hope to achieve with Eighteen B: (1) talk about skin care and skin health in a scientific and data-backed way; (2) bring solutions (not just raise awareness about problems) to the table, starting with our own proprietary ingredient b-silk™ protein; and (3) formulate beautiful and effective products that you can’t wait to put on everyday.” Go get ’em, Lindsay!
