you may be overtreating your skin and it is crying out for help
Self-care has never been bigger (increasing the risk of overtreating your skin). Even for us normal folk where there isn’t enough time in each day to do all the things we need to, we are finding ways to eke out a little ‘me-time’. That comes in many different forms, one of which is skincare. Everything from trying new products, cleansing, masking, exfoliating, and peeling our way to better skin.
In this new venture to try and find the best products for your skin, you may find your skin irritated and taking a few steps backward instead of forward. If that is the case, you may be overtreating your skin and it is crying out for help! A few signs that you may be overtreating your skin…
Rashes or redness – a sign your skin is irritated by an ingredient, often a fragrance, in the formula
Tight or flaky skin – a sign that your products are actually drying out your skin, often caused alcohol-based products or overusing anti-acne treatments
Itchy or irritated skin – a sign that you could be over-exfoliating, which come in physical and chemical variations. In physical ones, look for gentle products that use spherical beads made of jojoba esters so they don’t scratch and harm your skin barrier. Chemical ones like retinol and acid peels are great but should be used sparingly because they make your skin extra sensitive to the sun.
Help, I have overtreated my skin … now what?
If you think your skin is suffering from a case of too much skincare self-care, have no fear. Here is a simple regimen to reset your skin.
Cleanse Gently – Start with a mild cleanser that balances your skin’s pH and uses gentle surfactants. Our favorite is Tatcha One Step Camellia Cleansing Oil. It is formulated without sulfate detergents and leaves skin soft.
Restore Your Barrier – Our Firm + Replenish Serum is meant to reset your skin. It uses the power of vegan silk protein to replenish your skin barrier and adds back essential amino acids and lipids. It’s like taking your daily multi-vitamin with a big glass of water.
Hydrate – A last step of hydration is essential. We recommend Revitalizing Hydrogel Moisturizer for oily and combination skin types, and Hydrate + Rich Cream for normal to dry skin types. It’s so important to keep your skin hydrated, soft, and supple.
Overtreating skin is easy to do but also easy to treat with products that are nourishing to the skin and help to replenish your skin barrier. This is the power of B-SILK™ PROTEIN (aka vegan silk).
